Things you should know about Regional Indian Cuisines

Indian food is as diverse as Indian culture. It is the collection of various culinary influences and traditions from all over the Indian subcontinent. The methods of cooking, taste and preferences are different in different regions. The cuisines not only vary according to geographical regions, but they also vary seasonally. The food bloggers from different parts of India share the food trends of their respective regions through their micro-niche blogs.


Let's take a quick look at some of the best Indian regional cuisines along with their regions 


Punjab and North Indian Region


Punjab is also referred to as the breadbasket of India. North Indian food is heavily influenced by Central Asian region. Meat along with Indian bread is the speciality of North Indian food. People in this region love to cook their food in tandoor. The gravy that is made here is thick, spicy and creamy.


Some of the popular dishes are Roti, Naan, Seekh kebab, Daal Makhani, Sarso ka Saag along with Makke ki Roti. Chicken dishes like Tandoori Chicken, Chicken tikka, Butter Chicken is also famous. Punjab is also famous for Punjabi langars.


South Indian Region


It includes the dishes from states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Kerala, Telangana and Karnataka. The traditional foods of union territories like Pondicherry, Andaman and Nicobar Island and Lakshadweep also comes under South Indian cuisines.


The staple food for South Indian dishes is rice. Some of the popular dishes are Hyderabadi Biryani, Dosas, Uttapams, Idlis, Chettinad from Tamilnadu. The diversity of food in this region can also be seen. While the food in Kerala is more seafood and coconut-based, the food in Andhra Pradesh is very hot and spicy.


Rajasthan, Gujarat and Goa Regions 


Rajasthani food is influenced by the dry climate of the region. Due to scarcity of water, dairy products are used widely. Daal-Baati-Churma is the traditional dish of Rajasthan. Also here Ghee is used in the dishes extensively.


The simple way to distinguish the Gujarati food from other cuisines is the presence of a sweet touch. Some of the famous dishes are Khandvi, Undhiyu, Aam Shrikhand, Gujarati kadhi, Dhokla, Thepla and Handvo.


Goan food mainly includes seafood and porks. Goan Fish Curry, Pork Vindaloo, Chicken Cafreal, Sorak, Shark Ambot Tik are some of the famous Goan dishes.



Bengal and Orissa Regions


Fish is the main preference of Bengali and Odia people in food. Dishes involving fish are loved by them. 


Some of the famous Bengali dishes are Thal Muri, Begun Bhaja, Alu Posto, Shukto, Sandesh and Mishti Doi. Dalma is famous in Orissa.


Ladakh, Sikkim Regions


There is Tibetan touch in the cuisines in these regions. Because these are border areas, so the food culture of both countries are present in the regions.


Thupka, Momos are very popular dishes in these regions. Tongba, a kind of beer is famous in Sikkim.


Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh Regions


Oil and usual masalas are not used here in large amounts. But the food is characteristically hot and spicy. Use of bamboo sticks for cooking the food is also prevalent.

 

Some of the famous dishes are Pork Stew, Masor Tenga, Dawlrep Bai, Chamthong and Pasa.
